“Elon Musk in Talks with Major Automaker to License Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software”
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, revealed that discussions are underway with a major automaker regarding the licensing of Tesla’s hardware and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, currently undergoing testing on public roads. While the automaker’s identity remains undisclosed, Musk assured investors during a call that encompassed updates on various topics, including the Cybertruck, future robotaxis, artificial intelligence, robots, and bionic limbs.

In an update from April 24, 2024, Musk reiterated last year’s confirmation of early discussions with a major Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) about utilizing Tesla FSD, emphasizing the company’s openness to licensing the technology. However, specific details regarding the automaker involved were not disclosed. Tesla’s Autopilot, akin to GM’s Super Cruise or Ford’s BlueCruise, offers driver-assist functionality, necessitating the driver’s constant readiness to assume control. Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot, Mercedes’ Level 3 hands-free system does not require immediate driver intervention. Although the latest FSD versions boast enhanced capabilities over Autopilot, they are still in testing and lack certification for unsupervised driver handoff.
While the automaker engaged in discussions over FSD licensing remains unnamed, Musk expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a deal in 2024, potentially with multiple partners. Nonetheless, even if an agreement were reached promptly, it would take up to three years for an OEM to implement FSD technology fully. Musk emphasized that prospective partners would likely seek readiness for widespread deployment before finalizing any deals.
Furthermore, Musk highlighted the evolving nature of automobiles, likening their trajectory to that of smartphones, and emphasized the inevitability of autonomous “smart cars.” He underscored the significance of FSD for automakers’ competitiveness in the future, suggesting that vehicles lacking this feature may face diminished consumer interest. Musk’s vision entails FSD becoming indispensable, stating, “It’s license [FSD] or nobody will buy your car.”
Despite acknowledging past unfulfilled promises regarding FSD’s timeline, Musk expressed confidence in its eventual outperformance of human drivers. He anticipates that FSD will soon achieve safety levels far surpassing human capabilities, driven by advancements in AI and Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer. Musk also discussed Tesla’s pioneering efforts in humanoid robotics, including the development of actuators for these robots, which are expected to be utilized in Tesla’s manufacturing plants.
Moreover, Musk touched on ambitious endeavors such as combining Neuralink brain implants with robotic limbs for amputees, aiming to create highly capable cyborg bodies at a fraction of traditional costs. Regarding the Cybertruck, Musk highlighted its unique features and expressed optimism about production ramp-up, notwithstanding supply chain complexities. Despite strong demand for the Cybertruck, Tesla recently enlisted singer Katy Perry to promote the pickup online.
