Alarming Surge in U.S. School Shootings: A Statistical Overview
While data and charts can only offer a glimpse of the devastating impact of U.S. School shootings, they provide a grim illustration of the tragic toll and geographical prevalence of incidents that have become disturbingly common in the U.S. In 2023, the country witnessed a record-high of 346 school shooting incidents, averaging almost one incident per day, the highest total since at least 1966.

California and U.S. School Ohio shared the dubious distinction of the most incidents, each recording 25, while Texas followed closely with 23. These incidents resulted in 248 victims, either wounded or killed, excluding the shooter. Texas reported the highest number of casualties at 21, followed by Maryland (20) and California (18).
Data from the K-12 School Shooting Database, maintained by researcher David Riedman, highlights an alarming trend. Prior to 2018, the yearly incidents had never exceeded 60, with 2018 and 2021 experiencing significant spikes, doubling year over year. In 2023, the number of incidents was about six times the pre-2018 threshold, signaling a disturbing increase.
Although incidents rose in 2023 compared to 2022, U.S. School there was a slight decline of about 10% in the number of victims. Between 2018 and 2023, over 1,200 school shooting incidents occurred in the U.S., resulting in more than 1,000 victims, averaging 0.85 victims per incident. Some states, like Kentucky (1.9), Texas (1.6), and Colorado (1.3), surpassed the one-victim-per-incident rate, revealing an alarming trend.
When assessing rates relative to population size, Kentucky (7.7 victims per 1 million residents), Maryland (7.1), and Alabama (6.7) experienced rates more than double the national average (3.2), emphasizing the gravity of the issue. The correlation between larger populations and higher incidents becomes evident, underscoring the need for urgent attention.

In 2020, gun-related injuries surpassed vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death among U.S. School children and adolescents, and subsequent years witnessed a further increase in these tragic deaths.
