Sneak Peek: 2025 Volkswagen Golf R Teases Comparable Updates to the GTI

Volkswagen is in the process of updating its entire Golf hatchback lineup, and a sneak peek of the revamped 2025 Golf R has been revealed alongside the 2025 Golf GTI. The German automaker showcased a camouflaged prototype of the all-wheel-drive Golf R at an ice race in Austria, announcing that the car is set to make its official debut in mid-2024.

The lightly camouflaged prototype reveals shared design elements with the GTI, such as new headlights and taillights, while maintaining its distinctive aggressive front bumper and unique body kit. Notable features include larger wheels, prominent blue brake calipers, a rear spoiler, and sizable exhaust tips.

Although interior photos are yet to be disclosed, Volkswagen expectations include aligning with the GTI’s changes, introducing a new infotainment system and the replacement of touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel with physical buttons.

Considering the power boost given to the GTI, there is speculation about an increase in horsepower from the current 315 hp produced by the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine in the Golf R. However, the six-speed manual transmission, available in previous models, will no longer be an option, as VW has confirmed the discontinuation of the manual after the 2024 model year. The sole transmission choice will be the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, coupled with standard all-wheel drive.

More details on the updated Golf R are expected to be released soon, with its arrival in the U.S. anticipated later this year.
