Keratin Microsphere Gel

The skin, acting as a protective barrier, traditionally impedes the penetration of particles and shields against external threats. Recent research has uncovered that small particles containing substances conducive to hair growth can overcome this barrier, reaching the hair follicles for potential therapeutic applications.

A study conducted by the University of Tsukuba, published in ACS Applied Bio Materials, sheds light on the notable benefits of topically applying a gel containing water-soluble oxidized keratin, referred to as keratin microsphere gel, on mice. This application significantly increased cell proliferation and the expression of genes linked to hair growth in the papilla cells of hair follicles, thereby promoting hair development.

Upon application of the water-based keratin microsphere gel to the shaved backs of mice, hair regrowth initiated as early as the second day post-application, with subsequent acceleration in the growth rate. This effect was comparable to the renowned hair growth stimulant, minoxidil.

Genetic analysis of dorsal skin tissue samples in mice showcased a substantial upregulation in the expression of genes associated with hair cycle regulation and skin homeostasis. Furthermore, a skin model was developed, featuring a co-culture of a human-origin epidermal model on the upper layer and primary human papilla cells beneath. This model validated the stimulatory impact of keratin microspheres on papilla cells through gene expression analysis, affirming the gel’s permeability through the skin.

These groundbreaking findings mark the initial evidence of the hair growth-promoting properties inherent in keratin microsphere gel. Considering that keratin is a fundamental component of both hair and skin, its application as a hair growth agent is presumed to be safe and effective, with minimal anticipated adverse effects. The research offers a promising advancement in the realm of hair regrowth treatments, potentially revolutionizing approaches to combat hair loss with a focus on safety and efficacy.
