The film, directed, written, and produced by Dean DeBlois, is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025. Mason Thames and Nico Parker will star as Hiccup and Astrid, respectively.
The new movie will immerse audiences in DreamWorks Animation’s rich storytelling universe, building on the success of the original trilogy, which grossed over $1.6 billion. Despite casting new faces for Hiccup and Astrid due to the actors aging, the return of Gerard Butler as Stoick was a compelling choice. Stoick, the determined Viking chief and single father, was a fan favorite in the animated films.
Produced by Marc Platt for Marc Platt Productions and overseen by Lexi Barta at Universal, the live-action adaptation aims to pay homage to the cherished original cast while introducing fresh talent for the lead roles.
Amidst his busy schedule, marked by action-packed roles in films like the Olympus Has Fallen franchise and 300, Gerard Butler’s return to the How to Train Your Dragon universe adds another exciting chapter to his illustrious career. The actor is currently gearing up for the release of thrillers Plane and Kandahar, along with the sequel to his 2018 action hit, Den of Thieves, all scheduled to debut this year.
