Blackmon was running to first base on a grounder when the throw from Bogaerts hit his left arm and then ricocheted into his face. The impact caused him to immediately remove his helmet and clutch his face in pain as he fell to the ground. Medical staff attended to him for several minutes as his eye started to swell. Blackmon eventually walked off the field and was replaced by Hunter Goodman.

At the time of the injury, Blackmon was batting .255 with seven home runs on the season.
