However, the Starbucks Workers Union has announced a potential disruption on this day, referring to it as a “Red Cup Rebellion.” Thousands of employees at numerous stores nationwide plan to walk out, demanding that Starbucks cease its alleged illegal refusal to negotiate with baristas on crucial issues such as staffing and scheduling. Additionally, workers seek the deactivation of mobile ordering on future promotional days.

Scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, Red Cup Day involves customers receiving a free reusable cup by ordering any holiday or fall beverage, whether hot, iced, or blended. The list of qualifying drinks includes Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato, Caramel Brulée Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Gingerbread Latte, and more. This cup can be returned to any local Starbucks for a 10-cent beverage discount, along with 25 bonus stars for Starbucks Rewards members using the app.

Amidst the anticipation of Red Cup Day, Star Workers United has called for walkouts and strikes at numerous stores, citing concerns about inadequate staffing during high-traffic promotion days. The union claims that events like Red Cup Day bring a surge of customers without a corresponding increase in staff, putting considerable strain on workers. Starbucks employees are calling attention to these issues, emphasizing the challenges they face in managing various order channels with minimal staffing.

In response to the planned protests, Star spokesperson Andrew Trull expressed the company’s commitment to collaboration and urged Workers United to focus on negotiating first contracts. Star asserts its readiness to engage in negotiations with certified unions representing their partners. Despite the potential disruptions, Starbucks remains hopeful that discussions will prioritize the shared success of all parties involved.
